Schooling in Finland is taking a huge step to the future.
After taking a look at the currently outdated curriculum they are striving for more applicability within the education system and implementing a more life reflecting teaching structure.
The new system will consist of 'topics' as opposed to specific subjects and will encourage a more thought based approach from children who will work in small groups and problem solve all aspects of the topic. This will naturally lead students across many of the current curriculum subjects in their exploration on the 'topic' but keep the research material relevant and applicable.
The ergonomics of the classroom will take on a more sociable feel and group settings will replace the passive row seating currently employed in most schools. This will entice a collaborative environment where students will improve their communication skills and learn to work in a team environment.
A massive step to update the archaic education system which has not had major reform in the past 200 years. The changes should be implemented across Finland by 2020. Early indications show a growth in pupil outcomes since its introduction two years ago and many countries are monitoring the brave move by Finland in its bid to change the educating mindset.
“We would like to make Finland the leading country in terms of playful solutions to children’s learning,” said Olavi Mentanen, director of the Playful Learning Centre project.
